Did you ever decide what you want to do?

I thought I had decided. Then things changed, which made that decision a bit impossible.

[the world ended after all, and a couple of universe hops later, it doesn't exactly seem like a viable plan anymore. he hasn't even been inside of a kitchen in a very long time and doesn't know if he'll have the passion for it that he once did.]

[ There's a light raise of her brow, the softest twitch of amusement at her lips as Kate crosses one leg over the other and wraps her hands around her knees. ]

I guess it's a little like that, too. [ The world didn't end, but it was hard to concentrate on running when your parents' killers were still an unknown mass. ] Not sure if it's a bad thing. [ Because nowadays the world doesn't seem that bad. Her job definitely isn't, even if managing was never on the cards and working in a hospital even less. ]

... What did you want to do? [ That question comes out in a stilted way, jerky and not entirely natural sounding, like she wants to continue conversing but hasn't practised it in a long time. ]

You like where you ended up even if it isn't where you expected it'd be? [It's all that he can imagine happened if she doesn't mind that things have changed and she can no longer do what she'd decided on.

If Ethan notices the stilted way that her question comes off, he doesn't comment on it or look like it bothers him at all. His smile simply widens a bit at the question, and he tilts his head to the side.]

I actually wanted to be a professional chef. Own a restaurant. I loved cooking so you'd think that thought would have occurred to me far sooner than I did, but I used to be incredibly restless. [It took his best friend's suggestion to nudge him in that way when he'd been a bit lost before.]

[ A small incline of her head, a short nod. That sums it up, basically. But she seems to enjoy watching him talk about the idea, if her tilted head and relaxed expression mean anything. ]

Some things are just too obvious, prob'ly. [ People never see the forest for the trees, and all of that. ]

Think that was the case, yeah. It was something I was passionate about. Putting flavors together, making food for people I cared about.

[Ethan smiles, shaking his head as his hand slides behind his neck a bit because it feels like a very long time ago now.] So what about you? What did you decide to do before... life got in the way?

[ Hmm, it's easy to answer, but after he's mentioned why, Kate supposes she can't just say what it is. ] Athlete. I was gonna be an athlete. Probably triple jump or sprinting.

Sounds pretty amazing honestly. You passionate about being athletic? [Passion is important. He doesn't feel that passion towards cooking anymore but he hasn't... cooked in a very long time.]

Yeah. [ Even nowadays. Maybe not formal track stuff, but the rooftops of a city make for an excellent run. ] It's not the same, but it's still great.
