about The Piazza: Rules

THE RULES

As this is an open, freeform, app-free community, we'd like to keep askandanswer as laid-back and welcoming as we can. For that reason, we have these rules in place; not to deter anyone from posting or to impose upon players, but to keep everyone happy in a place where all can enjoy RPing together, the old school way! Thus, the rules:

RULE 1: DON'T BE A DICK

Remember to keep your OOC separate from your IC. IC actions WILL have IC consequences. A character who behaves like a jerk may have people react to them as though they are a jerk. This is sometimes called Negative CR; it is both fine and encouraged in askandanswer. Just like in real life, your pretendyfuntimes end where someone else's begin, so if you are playing a thread with someone and you're not sure if your plot is imposing upon them or their character, COMMUNICATE COMMUNICATE COMMUNICATE. Add an OOC note to your post, or send a quick PM to the other character's DW inbox! We want to keep everything as drama-free as possible, so remember to always be courteous to your fellow player in the community.

Bringing outside drama into askandanswer is unacceptable. If you have an issue with another player, don't reply to their posts or comments. It's that simple. Don't make the mods step in on this. Be grown-ups here.

There is a 3-strike policy in play with regard to mod warnings for behavior. However, if behavior proves to be totally unacceptable, moderators reserve the right to ban you outright. Hopefully this will only have to be applied to obvious trolls and that sort of thing.

RULE 2: ALL POSTS MUST ASK A QUESTION

While this is a freeform RP community, the central concept is to have characters from everywhere gathered in an area for the purpose of asking questions for others to answer, and to answer questions that other characters ask. For that reason, every new post made MUST adhere to format and ask a question. If you forget to add a question in the OP, you'll probably be gently reminded to do so by another player or a mod, so you can go back and edit your OP to add one in. Any questionless freeform RPing should be done in personal journals, not on the main comm!

If you wish to have your character ask a question that is blocked from a certain other character, just have them say something about waiting for a moment when that character isn't around, and add an OOC note saying that So-and-so isn't aware of this question or something similar. Use your creativity, people!

Those wishing to have their characters appear anonymously to ask a question, characters who want to make a text-only post, or characters who are otherwise unable to appear in person may utilize a speaker system for audio only posts, or a video screen for video or text posts. These can be set up by your helpful Masked Ones friends according to necessity, so feel free to use them!

With the "old-school" nature of this community, some newer players may not be familiar with the format, so just a quick heads-up that there IS continuity in this community! It is not a meme like bakerstreet or dressing-room like dear_mun, it is a freeform open comm where CR is encouraged, so your characters can have lasting friendships (and rivalries!). Just keep that in mind as you play.

RULE 3: NO SPAMMING

Please try to keep your posts to a reasonable number per day. Do not post to the community more than once in a row with the same character. If you find you have more questions to ask after you have posted, edit them into your OP.

People are encouraged to thread around and jump into conversations wherever appropriate, so please be civil. If a conversation is private, make a note of it somewhere. If you absolutely must keep anyone else from replying to a certain ongoing thread, please move it to a personal journal. This is also encouraged! The more CR and ongoing plot you get from askandanswer, the better!

RULE 3: CUTS AND CONTENT WARNINGS

Cuts and content warnings on commonly triggering or upsetting topics (eating disorders, suicide, sexual assault, etc) as well as on obviously NWS topics (sex and gore &etc) must be utilized. If a mod decides your post needs a cut and warning for content in your OP where there isn't one, they may choose to edit one into your post. This is to keep the RP environment safe and conflict-free for all who choose to play here, so please be considerate of your fellow players and use your own judgement on this! Any threads that start out fine but eventually start to go to a very obviously NWS place, such as smut threading or horrible violence, MUST be taken to personal journals. If you wouldn't do it in full view of everybody in the middle of the Piazza, do it in your own journal!

If you find a post that does not have a cut in place where you think it should, please feel free to report it to the mod journal so we can put one in. It's no trouble at all!

If/When utilizing images, please keep them to a reasonable size-- don't break tables. If you feel your image may be too big, or NWS or upsetting or you just feel like it, feel free to place it under a cut with a short description. Use your discretion on this, but again, if a mod feels the need to edit in a cut for any of the above reasons, they may do so.

RULE 4: TYPES OF ALLOWED CHARACTERS

Both Canon and OC characters are allowed in askandanswer. This includes Canon OCs, Canon AUs, Original Universe OCs, &etc. There are no limits as to how many doubles of a character may exist within the comm at any given time.

That said, characters who are not fictional (in otherwords, Real People) are not allowed in askandanswer. Historical characters are acceptable as long as they have not been alive in the past 100 years. For example: Playing Julius Caesar is fine. Playing Robert Downey Jr. is unacceptable. Playing Robin Williams is both unacceptable and in poor taste. You get the idea.

Both live action and artwork (cartoon, anime, manga or illustration) icons are totally fine, although it's a good idea to have them be generally representative of the character whose journal it is! As long as you're giving your RP partners a good idea of who they're threading with, you're fine.

Along those lines, having some form of identifying information on your character journal is appreciated! Just their name and canon, in the profile or elsewhere, would probably be enough for most players-- this won't be enforced, per se, but it is considerate, and you might not get many people to play with you if they have no idea who you are!

Please try not to thread with yourself in the main comm. It's kind of weird!

RULE 5: PLEASE TAG YOUR POSTS

This isn't so much a hard-and-fast rule, but more of a just-so-ya-know heads up: anyone can tag any post in askandanswer! This is for ease of keeping track of who posted what and who threaded with who where. Tag your posts with your character's username and a fandom tag of the format as follows: "fandom: fandomname". The "mod post" tag is reserved for posts made by mods, obviously.

RULE 6: RULES CHANGE

Community rules are never set in stone. If the mods feel anything needs to be added to the rules post, they will do so, and alert the community via a mod post. Any polls or other OOC community news posts will be made via mod post, so keep an eye open for those, they might be important/fun!

If you have a question or concern, please feel free to PM the mod journal [personal profile] masked_ones or leave a comment on this post. All comments to this post are screened, for ease of asking.

Thanks, and have fun in The Piazza!
