What do you do when there's no apocalypse to cancel?

[ life is kind of boring without that. ]

I don't know, I kinda get the feeling that what happens where I'm from is probably a bit different to what you're talking about.

Wanna fill me in?

In my world there are monsters that came from a different dimension to conquer us. We destroyed their portal after decades of attacks.

We no longer have to fight but there is nothing to do.

Seriously? Wow, okay that sounds pretty awesome for one thing. That you beat them I mean, not that they were there in the first place.

But it sounds to me like there's tons of things that you could do. Like there must be a lot to repair and rebuild, right? And sure, maybe that seems like a lot and maybe people don't always know where to get started with it all, but an extra pair of hands is always appreciated.

And if you're worried about them maybe coming back, you can probably find things to do to keep an eye on the portal? Maybe find out if there's a chance that another one could happen or something.

We have always been rebuilding. It is something we are used to. I always help where I can, but we are no longer pilots.

And our scientists assure us that they are keeping an eye on everything. [ somewhat unconvincingly. ] We are happy.

Are you really though?

[Because yeah, it sounds like that's not the case for her at least. He's starting to get an idea about what this is really about now.]

[ hey wait no getting too close! ] Yes. Did you not say you enjoy that the world is not ending? I do as well. [ like the human people, damnit. ]

[Yeah, because that sounds convincing.]

You sure? Because it's actually not that weird for people to feel like they miss something like that, especially if it's been their whole life. And you did say that had been going on for a really long time, right?

I mean, it must be kinda scary, like your whole life has to be different now. People don't adapt to that kind of thing easily.

What would you do if there was no longer anything to wait for?

[He shrugs and smiles a bit sadly, understanding a little of where she's coming from. It's hard to imagine what his life would be like if suddenly no one needed the League anymore.]

I suppose I'd have to ask myself what I wanted to do with my life now. Maybe I could start over with something new, or use what I learned somewhere else. Maybe instead of fighting to save the world, you can help to keep it safe from smaller problems.

It's not going to be easy or perfect, but maybe it's worth it if it means that the world is going to be better from now on.
